I’m trying to keep this page up to date. It is not easy because there is only one of me…  if I don’t do it, it doesn’t get done. I make and sell wine racks all the time. They are all different, because I use “free” recycled, reclaimed or salvaged material for the most part. Some pieces are one off. Sometimes I will cut out two or three different styles with maybe different materials, all at the same time, to be more efficient. Sometimes I have enough material to make as many as four to six pieces all the same time, but I stain them differently, or the tops will be different on a common rack style.

Some pieces are constructed from “soft woods” like Pine, Fir, Cedar, and Redwood. These are beautiful materials but easily ding and dent, so typically I distress the surfaces before applying a waterborne finish. It is less toxic for me to apply, is a very durable professional finish. It is not cheap, but considering the time I have into making these pieces, it is worth it for me to use the best products that I have tried in thirty years of applying wood finishes.

Some pieces are constructed from “hard woods” like Oak, Walnut, Cherry, Maple or maybe exotic tropical lumber. I typically finish these with solvent based Polyurethane Varnish. It is nasty to apply, takes three times as long as waterborne finishes. I prefer it, because it make the natural grain and color pop out, as well as being an extremely hard, durable, water and alcohol proof finish. Again, for me it is worth the trouble and expense for it’s superior performance.
